Now Enrolling Kindergartners For Unique Dual Language Immersion Program at Rorimer

Rowland Unified is at the forefront of preparing students for the global world with its International Baccalaureate (IB) Programmes at both Nogales and Rowland High Schools and the unique Dual Language Immersion Program at Rorimer Elementary.

Research findings demonstrate the importance of learning more than one language. The New York Times published an article in its March 17, 2012 issue entitled, “Why Bilinguals Are Smarter” that states, “Being bilingual, it turns out, makes you smarter. It can have a profound effect on your brain, improving cognitive skills not related to language and even shielding against dementia in old age.”

Rorimer Elementary Principal Liz Leon is passionate to share this information with the community since she has the only Dual Immersion Program in Rowland USD, and one of the very few in the San Gabriel Valley.

The goal of the Dual Language Immersion Program is to have children think, read, write, and communicate naturally in two languages: English and Spanish. Native Spanish and native English speaking students study together, beginning in Kindergarten, in this intensive K-6 program.

“There is a real popularity for the program growing since it is so effective. We have seen the results with CST test scores showing our 3rd, 4th and 5th Dual classes outperforming our general English classes,” said Leon.

The key to success is the long-term commitment. Students must start the program in Kindergarten, where 80% of instruction and academic subjects are taught in Spanish and 20% in English. By 4th – 6th grades, 50% of instruction is in Spanish and English.

“I truly believe this is the future. We need our students to be well-rounded, global citizens and this program helps them develop respect and appreciation for other cultures. It also prepares them for college and the workforce,” said Leon.

A passionate supporter of Bilingual Education, Leon was recognized last year for her efforts by being named, “Outstanding Administrator of the Year” by the Los Angeles County Bilingual Directors Association.
